What is the purpose of a short film?

The purposes or intentions of a short film can be categorised  into four individual groups:
>Promotion
>Education
>Entertainment
>Experimentation

Promotion:
Short films are often created in order to promote directors or film makers that are young, unheard of or up and coming, trying to gain recognition and credit for their work.
Fede Alverez is a perfect example of a young film maker who on a 300 dollar budget managed to create a short film "Ataque de Panico" which was a success on Youtube reaching 1.5 million views, due to this success he was offered a 30 million dollar contract with Hollywood.

Education and Awareness:
Short films are often used to educate people and comment on current, political, ethical or moral issues. Many portray social issues which are controversial and often provoke's thought, in order to stimulate a debate or issue. "Gravity" by Colin Hutton deals with social issues related to crimes, especially amongst youths, which seems to be a growing issue within todays society. Hutton is raising awareness, that this is a growing problem which seems to be surrounding us, therefore it must be dealt with.

Entertainment/Experimentation:
Most short films are created for entertainment purposes, young up and coming film directors usually experiment and try out different types of film techniques that they have developed in order to produce a film to be viewed by the audience. The short films are most commonly entered into film competitions or published onto Youtube, allowing a wide range of audiences to view them. An example of this would be "Sign Language" by Oscar Sharp who had intentionally create this entertaining short film for a competition, which he actually ended up winning. Furthermore "Veronique" by Patrik Bergh which was created purely for the entertainment of the audience.
